Coming up this week!
The Joey Thomas Big Band is bringing some Big Band Treasures to Frankfort, NY at the great little bandstand at the St. Francis Club. It’s an evening of big band music and open to all.
In addition to some of the popular “classics” like Dean Martin’s rendition of I’m Sitting on Top of The World, we’ll be sampling from across the big band spectrum including tunes like Rock Around The Clock to Stan Kenton’s Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea to Doc Severinsen’s version of In The Mood to Michael Bublé’s Sway.
If you’re in the greater Utica, Herkimer, Little Falls, Richfield Springs or Cooperstown area, come on over and take a listen! We’d love to play for you!
For over a decade, the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival has featured a wealth of jazz greats, critically acclaimed up-and-coming artists, and local favorites. This year, The Joey Thomas Big Band has been invited to share our passion for the big band with a tribute to three icons who brought the big band beyond the swing era.
On July 2, 1976, the bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and Maynard Ferguson performed at the Saratoga Jazz Festival. Inspired by the convergence of these three jazz legends, bandleader Joey Thomas gives his nod to these jazz masters as we make our Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival debut. Highlighting the swing of Kenton with an all-time favorite like “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” to the jumpin’ and jivin’ of Woody Herman’s take on Ellington’s “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” to the high voltage of a Ferguson chart, The Joey Thomas Big Band will have any jazz lover falling in love with the big band all over again.
The JTBB will be on 2:30 – 3:30 p.m, but you’ll want to plan to attend this all-day concert. The Jazz Festival is an event for all ages, and admission is still free! Food & beverages will be available for purchase. Presented by Capital Bank, an evening fireworks show over the Hudson River will bring the festival to a close. We hope to see you there!
Mark your calendars … With “That Old Black Magic” to “Mr. Bojangles,” Amsterdam native Louie Velez brings Sammy Davis Jr. alive with a little help from The Joey Thomas Big Band!
Come to the Glove Theatre to experience a nostalgic evening with Sammy and his special guests Liza Minnelli (Justin De Maria a.k.a. Pacifica Rim). This special tribute show, with Louis Stellato as the MC, is a fundraiser for the United Way of Fulton County and Glove Performing Arts Center.

We’re getting our summer underway and can share with you that The Joey Thomas Big Band will be bringing some Big Band Treasures to Frankfort, NY in August. More details will be forthcoming, so stay tuned!
Joey Thomas and the members of The Joey Thomas Big Band extend our condolences to the family of David Bournazian as they and our greater Capital Region family of musicians mourn his passing on January 8th (2015).
The impact “Mr. B.” had on his students, at Mohonasen is well said in an Albany Times Union article (click here). For those of us who had the pleasure of sharing the band stand with Dave are better people and performers by way of his kindness, uplifting spirit, and his passionate leadership. His absence from our musical community will be keenly noticed.
Services are being held at the Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Church in Troy, NY. Please click here for service details and obituary.

The Sinatra songbook from its beginning in the swing era of the 1930’s to the definitive recordings of the “sing” era of the 40’s and 50’s are representative of Frank Sinatra’s impact on American Culture, and despite changing record formats, Sinatra continually made his mark singing and promoting the American popular song throughout a career that spanned 60 years.
With dinner and a show, The Joey Thomas Big Band will have you humming Sinatra standards including “The Christmas Waltz,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and “White Christmas” long after the evening is over!
A perfect Christmas gift for grandparents, parents . . . or any American Songbook lover!
